Americano
A social format where you change partner every round, play short matches scored in rally points, and keep your own points total. The player with the most points at the end wins.
Cosa cambia rispetto a una partita standard
Rally-point scoring replaces 15, 30, 40, games and sets. You score as an individual, not as a pair, and your partner changes every round. Matches are much shorter than a best of three sets match, so there is no set break or change of ends routine unless the organiser adds one. The FIP rules on serving order through a set do not fit a points race, so the organiser sets a serving pattern instead.
Le regole
Every rally scores one point for the pair that wins it, whoever served. There are no games, sets, deuce or advantage. A match ends when the two scores add up to the agreed total. At 24 points, 15 to 9 ends the match, and so does 24 to 0. Both players in a pair add the pair's score to their own totals. Lose 9 to 15 and you each add 9. Partners and opponents change every round to a schedule, so you play with and against as many people as possible. Each rally is played under the normal FIP rules: the serve, the walls, faults and lets all work as usual. The serving pattern is the organiser's choice. A common approach is a set number of serves, often two to four, before the serve passes to the other pair, following the usual order of servers. With an even target, a draw such as 12 to 12 at 24 is possible. Each player simply adds 12. An odd target such as 21 makes a draw impossible. The player with the highest total after the last round wins. The tie-break order, such as point difference and then wins, is the organiser's choice and should be announced.
Come organizzarlo
Count the players and courts. If the number does not divide by four, decide who rests each round and how resting players are scored (see Rotating players). Choose the target or time per match and the serving pattern, and announce the tie-break order for the standings. Make the schedule. With a multiple of four players and a court for every four, everyone can partner everyone else once in one round fewer than the number of players. Brief the players: how to score, how to serve, how long they have and where to go next. Start every court together and collect each score as soon as a match ends. Update the standings after each round, and post the next round's courts quickly. After the last round, announce the totals and settle any tie with the rule you announced at the start.
