Thrown, dropped or lost rackets

The racket must be in your hand when it meets the ball. Throwing it at the ball, dropping it or breaking the wrist cord during a point loses that point.

Thrown rackets

A ball hit with a racket that has left your hand loses the point, even if the shot lands in.

Dropped rackets and the cord

If your racket slips out of your hand or the wrist cord breaks during a point, your pair loses that point straight away. Since 2026 this is written into the rules rather than left to the umpire.

Racket abuse

Throwing a racket or smashing it against the court, net or walls is a conduct offence, punished on the penalty scale.
